Mike Turnill BSc, MBCS, Diploma in Computing (Cantab)
Mike became a trustee in January 2011, but has been working with Hearing Link as a volunteer since 2009, focusing on improving their IT systems so the charity can improve their services. He has been deaf since birth, and appreciates the difficulties of living with a hearing impairment.
Mike would like to see Hearing Link make more effective use of modern information technology in order to provide improved and extended services to its members. At the same time this should also help members to communicate more effectively with staff and with each other. To do this he feels Hearing Link needs a higher and more balanced revenue stream, with increased donations along side the existing grants that are under threat from government cutbacks.
He feels honoured to be invited to become a Trustee and to work alongside some remarkable people. He hopes he can contribute to the Board using his many years of IT experience, latterly in European roles with Oracle Corporation and also use the experience gained during his six years as Council member for the Association for Geographical Information. He also hopes to remain an active Hearing Link volunteer such that he is constantly reminded of the difficulties people face.
Mike is married and lives in Henley-on-Thames. He has two grown up children and six marvellous grandchildren. He enjoys reading, walking, skiing and yes – even opera with his hearing aid on!
He would like to encourage anyone who has ideas for improving Hearing Link or questions about the charity’s strategy and direction to contact him through Head Office.
