A Beautiful Noise by Sam Collins

By Sylvia, Peer Support Volunteer
The story unfolds in the rural village of Bedingford where the reader encounters Matthew, the bankrupt earl, who sets the tone for the ensuing plot.
I was surprised how quickly I warmed to the characters, all with a story to tell and Sam deftly interweaves their lives to deliver a captivating tale with many facets.
There is skulduggery and farcical moments, but underlying that is an exposure of the vulnerability of various individuals when faced with life changing events. The impact of hearing loss gives the reader a different perspective to many books, often written as a personal account. Here the reader is given a gradually opening window into the
lives of the characters living with it.
Sam’s story demonstrates that what appears on the surface can be misleading as challenging personal issues are revealed In so doing, she allows the reader to experience both highs and lows, but a pervading sense of humour means that the reader is never far from life’s uplifting moments, which makes this book such an enjoyable read.
