Swindon Lipreading Group

About our group

Swindon’s Lipreading Group takes place once a month, to provide a place of welcome, friendship and support for anyone with a hearing loss, especially those who are losing their hearing as they get older. We also warmly welcome partners and carers.

We share worries, concerns and experiences as well as enjoying a laugh and celebrating communication success. And we always have a cup of tea or coffee!

The Group is led by Libbie, a retired teacher of Deaf children. She is always on the hunt for a fully qualified teacher of lipreading to take over the group.

We practise fingerspelling as well as using lipreading exercises and games to improve our skills. We discuss communications tips and discuss the best ways of encouraging the ‘hearing world’ to take on board our communication needs.

We invite guest speakers including staff from audiology; volunteers from Hearing Dogs; the Bobby Van and also Social Services, who provide equipment for the home …flashing doorbells, vibrating alarms etc.

We arrange social outings, including a Christmas meal and other special celebrations.

Venue

We meet at Tesco’s on Ocotal Way in Swindon, in their Community Room, usually on the last Tuesday each month, from 1.45pm-3.15pm.

The cost is £2 per visit or £10 for the year. The first visit is free!

New members always welcome. A loop system is provided
