...doesn’t hear words, the loss of noise has been making her life harder, especially as her tinnitus has been overwhelming and exhausting. If we’d replaced the tube we wouldn’t be wondering how long it takes for a new mould to be fitted – but, to be honest, we were never told the aid would need retubing. So we’re learning the hard way, again, I hope others learn from our mistake, and I’ll be fitting a new tube every four months....

Testing Testing, Testing.

...aids I see on a daily basis and this week I met two people with bad Tinnitus. I guess I’m more aware of these problems or just willing to talk about them. I do wonder how many people struggle without being recognised by the medical system. What is the true statistic for impaired hearing? Perhaps it would help to compare hearing difficulties with driving. If you ignore the oil warning light in the car and then the ‘Engine Fault’ alert...

Stormy Weather

Sue is a great weather forecaster, as air pressure fluctuates she feels her ears change and knows what to expect. Her balance changes in concert with the tone, pitch and volume of her tinnitus and she knows to avoid ‘complicated’ situations. Lip reading is also harder as her head’s filled with distractions. Over the past few weeks, while I’ve been incommunicado with a sick laptop as well as other things demanding my attention, we lost Lord Ashley (Jack Ashley, MP,...

...simulate Tinnitus, and hearing defenders to wear over the ear buds. We then spent the morning without hearing anything but the white noise, not so hard indoors, but in the street – wow. In the world of cars and other people we actually got the idea, with heads swivelling, eyes wide open in fear we became more understanding of the difficulties involved with not hearing. I’d managed to ‘do’ the deaf awareness very early in Sue’s loss of hearing, not...

Tuning out

...Anyway, those experiences worked to provide me with an inkling of what impairment hearing must be like to live with. Not sure how I’d cope every day, or sleep with extreme Tinnitus come to that! So I’m not offended when Sue takes time off from the world (i.e. me) when she is tired (not rude) in the evening. My father, who understands what she copes with, isn’t offended either during our visits if Sue prefers to surf the net on...
